Obesity in Pregnancy

Project Manager: Dr Kate Fitzsimons
Timescale: January 2008 - December 2010
Summary: The CMACE Obesity in Pregnancy project was selected as the principal project with a maternal health focus for 2008 - 2010 as part of the national enquiry programme of work.  The project comprises three phases:-
  • A national survey investigating how maternity services are equipped to care for women with obesity.
  • The development of national standards of care based on evidence and consensus expert opinion.
  • A national audit of care provided for women with a BMI ≥35 kg/m2.  This phase involves two stages: 1) a prospective notification stage, in which detailed information is collected on women with a pregnancy BMI  ≥35 kg/m2, and 2) a retrospective review stage, in which the medical records from a sample of women in the prospective notification stage are reviewed to assess the care against developed standards.
Progress report: All three phases have been completed.  The project report, which will present the findings from each phase of the project, will be launched at a conference on 7th December 2010.

The national standards of care were used to develop a joint CMACE/RCOG guideline on the Management of women with obesity in pregnancy.  The guideline was published in March 2010.  Please click here to access the guideline.
Some of the findings from the project have been presented at the following conferences:
  • 8th International Scientific Meeting of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Abu Dhabi, 7th-9th December 2009)
  • 32nd British International Congress of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Belfast, 20th-23rd June 2009)
