Wales

The regional office covers the whole of Wales. There are 10 NHS trusts within the region.

Wales has a population of approximately 3 million people and a birth rate of approx 33,000 per year (ONS 2005).

Current work in the regional office includes Maternal and Perinatal surveillance and the Obesity Study. 

In 2007 Wales piloted the new seminar format of disseminating report findings and held two seminars (one in Wrexham and one in Cardiff) on "Diabetes in Pregnancy - are we providing the best care?"  The Focus of the seminar was to translate the recommendations from the report into practice.  Wales also hosted one of the launches of the Saving Mothers' Lives 2003-2005 report in December with a conference in Cardiff.

As a follow on from the Child Death Review study, Dawn Roberts and Allan Wardhaugh, who were both integral to the study in Wales, have been part of a Working Group in Wales that has been discussing how to take reviews of child deaths in Wales forward.  A conference is being held on June 12th in Cardiff to disseminate the findings from the CEMACH Why Children Die report and to give an overivew of how this important work is likely to be taken forward in Wales.
