Maternal Death Enquiry
Clinical Director for "Saving Mothers' Lives": Gwyneth Lewis
Timescale: Ongoing
Summary: The confidential enquiries into maternal deaths have a long and distinguished history. They commenced in 1952 and became UK wide in the 1980’s when Scotland joined. The Republic of Ireland became a participant in 2009.
The findings from the maternal death enquiry are published in a triennial report titled "Saving Mothers' Lives”. The reports contain the results of detailed case reviews of all maternal deaths. They also include analyses of trends and recommendations for improving clinical practice and for national policy on maternity. The aim of the Enquiry is to help ensure that all pregnant and recently delivered women receive safe, high quality care delivered in appropriate settings based on their individual needs. Addressing inequalities in access to and outcomes of care remains an important objective.
The latest “Saving Mothers' Lives” report containing the results of enquiries into maternal deaths occurring between 2006 and 2008 will be published in March 2011. Previous reports are available to purchase via this website by clicking on the Buy Now icon. The Executive and Midwifery summaries can be obtained free of charge (plus postage + packaging) by also clicking the Buy Now icon.
